You didn't say exactly where in Japan, so I mostly stayed with Tokyo and gave you a few other sites too. It's HOT and HUMID in July and we still have some rain.(?) The weather has been strange this year. August is the hottest and most humid month. Bring light, comfortable clothes and shoes. Don't forget you have to take off your shoes at some places. Carry handkerchiefs and mini towels in your bag. (You can get these once here, they're found just about everywhere.) Hope this helps, have a great time!

Kyoto - Awesome city, with easy transportation. Go to the Gion district. Nijo Castle - this castle is in the middle of Kyoto, but once inside the gates you can't hear noises from the city
Hagi - a very small town where some Samari used to live, it is great there, not a whole lot of English there
Hiroshima - Must go to a baseball game and to the Atomic Bomb Museum
Miyajima - an Island with many shrines. The deer roam the streets.
Akiyoshido Cavern

I don't think I have 10 places to list but I can definitely recommend a few places.

1. Emperor's Palace/Grounds (Tokyo)
2. Nikko (hot springs)
3. Tokyo Tower (the view is awesome from the top!)
4. Nagano (countryside)
5. Yokohama (especially Chinatown)
6. Ride the bullet trains somewhere!

I'm only recommending places I've visited myself. These places are all around Tokyo. My family also highly recommends Kyoto (ancient Japan), Osaka, and Nagasaki (if you're into WWII stuff).

I would definitely visit some temples, they are very peaceful if you go to some of the smaller ones. In Nagano I would visit Zenkoji Temple, it is their biggest but has a beautiful atmosphere. I would also try as many different foods as possible, don't go there and eat mcdonalds. Also hot springs are a lot of fun, I went to one with all kinds of monkeys and one came up and sat on my shoe, that was awesome. Also Matsumoto Castle is really neat. Try as many different things as possible, that is my biggest suggestion.
