I don't agree with this idea. Some things are tried and true, their reputation precedes them and they don't need to change to sell.

Look at Hershey bars. They may introduce a new bar once in a while(like a white chocolate bar). But the milk chocolate bar has been the same, wrapper and all, for basically ever. I don't think there are any other brand recognizable plain milk chocolate bars in the USA.

Look at Arm & Hammer baking soda. Everyone knows it's the same orange box that has a zillion uses. I don't see any change in their marketing either.

As with every thing in life, there is a state of constant change. if there is none, things tend to regress. Marketing, in order to stay relevant and communicate effectively, needs to change and keep abreast with the market it is trying to communicate to. A market is largely drawn up of human beings, and human beings grow bored, and seek out change.

this is because as you know that according to BCG consulting group approach, any corporation has dogs, stars, cash cows, and question marks, and they do not remain constant for long time so there is a strategy to change question marks into stars and then into cash cows so there is always a thinking of changing marketing.
another common reason is that every product/service has life cycle stage, development, introduction, growth, maturity, decline. so in order to move through this cycle , firms have to adopt different marketing strategies at different time periods.

It is important to occasionally update the image of a brand- it shouldn't be done constantly because you want your consumers to be able to identify your brand easily, but every 1-2 years, it is important to look at your marketing tactics and see if they still fit with the direction the company is heading. Like most things, people grow tired and over-exposed (desensitized) to certain campaigns, to keep your target audience's interest and focus on your company and not your competitors, it is important to reinvent yourself, while still maintaining your core values.
