more than likely a grass snake. britain only has two species of snake and the other is an adder. if it is an adder it will have a zigzag pattern on its back. its colours will vary from black to pale grey with white, cream or pale yellow patterns. a grass snake is a greenish colour with a yellow band round the base of its head. grass snakes are often found in and around water aswell.

This sounds like a grass snake. Harmless to humans and animals. Its only defence is to play dead and it does sometimes have abit of a smell. If you found it in a pond then it'll eat any fish you have in there. Fish is one of its favourite foods if it can get it and it can swim underwater well. In fact I believe they can stay underwater for 1-2 hours!! They also like to eat eggs, so keep chickens away! Last summer we wondered why our goldfish was disappearing, (the little ones), we blamed the heron but it turned out to be grass snakes. If you see one, please dont harm it, it'll go away by itself once it knows people are around. Oh I should add they're harmless to pets but not to small vermin like rats and mice!

are you sure it's a snake? Could it be a slow worm? They're smaller but look like little snakes.

definitely a grass snake, completely harmless (promise!)although they make a frightening noise when you go near them. actually illegal to move/re-locate them. don't worry they're quite a useful pest controller, suggest naming him and making friends, maybe offer him a frog?
