The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly referred to as simply "Wimbledon", is the oldest and arguably most prestigious event in the sport of tennis. Held every June or July (starts 6 weeks before the first Monday in August) in London, the tournament is the third Grand Slam event played each year, preceded by the Australian Open and the French Open, and followed by the U.S. Open. The tournament (which is the only Grand Slam event played on grass) lasts for two weeks, subject to extensions for rain. Separate tournaments are simultaneously held for Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Youth tournaments — Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles, Boys' Doubles and Girls' Doubles — are also held. Additionally, special invitational tournaments are held: the 35 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 45 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 35 and over Ladies' Doubles and wheelchair doubles.

Its the place where a tennis tournament gets washed out for several days each year, and if you are really really lucky, you get to hear Sir Cliff Richards sing. Wimbledon fortnight is the one time in the year wher the UK is guaranteed to get rain.

It is a suburb of London where for decades the British followers of tennis have queued for rare tickets. Then cheered the local no-hoper until he/she is knocked out by any one of five hundred foreign players who want to win rather than have a jolly good game. It is the heart of the sport and the pinnacle to which all players aspire. It is a global demonstration of the way in which a sport should be managed and presented. It has the decorum that that is notably absent in such raucous events as Toilet Flushing Meadow . It offers a universal presentation in English that is clear and uncomplicated.
