I mean really, how does this make sense? "My mom want's me to mow the lawn." Please! And when someone does such a thing, they seem to have no rule governing their mistake. The next third-person singular verb in their paragraph will have no apostrophe! Have we lost all sense of order when it comes to punctuation? What on earth could possess someone to do such a thing? What should be the punishment for butchering one's native language?

You absolutely must read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss. It's all about the decline of proper punctuation. Of course, what's even worse than the apostrophe in verbs is the one in plurals: apple's, monkey's, etc. What could possess someone to do these things? Sheer ignorance. (For those of you all ready to fire off barely-literate replies calling us anal-retentive, etc., please note that ignorant does not mean stupid.)

Read the book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"--you will really enjoy it. It's about this very subject and only those like us who can be angry over a misplaced piece of punctuation can appreciate it.
People who do that are ignorant, pure and simple. If there's an "s" then it must need an apostrophe, correct?

You see, some people in this world are stupid. I went to a good high school and just assumed that most people were at a certain level of intelligence. This is very wrong. There are many people out there that you look at and wonder how they even find food for themselves or have any money. Mistakes like the one you cited are most often made by very stupid people.

They do it out of ignorance of the rules of grammar.
There should be no punishment other then being laughed at and corrected by a peer.
