Perhaps the following write-up could give you some idea as to what and how it is required.
A wedding planner is a person who undertakes organisation, arrangement and management of all wedding functions and related activities in a professional way; as per the budget of the host and his requirements.
These arrangements are tailor made in discussion with the host and include a series of ceremonies such as sangeet, mehndi, shagun, wedding reception, Feras, Vidai, first visit after marriage etc.
One need to have meticulous planning, resourcing and executing capabilities with abilities to meet contingent requirements, back-up arrangements and good quality PRO capabilities.
The concept in India is not very popular so far and is confined to high end society. Here, the arrangements are normally fragmented and people are not quite tuned to the concept and thus very low appreciation for the job/efforts put in by the planner.

Get married urselves!! and do everything urselves for ur marriage.
doing it for others for the first time is a costly affair.. they won't leave you if you screws up things..LOL
if u do it for urselves.. u can get all the feedback directly.. and write down everything which u did and missed and wish urselves better luck next time :)
