nowadays iPods are very cheap if you buy an iPod Shuffle but as far as iTunes goes-it's fantastic...it's songs are downloaded specially for iPods and depending on how old your daughter is, you can even create a music 'allowance' for her to control her spending.

this question is really dependant on the person. ITunes and IPod are very nice user experiences. The capacity on the IPod is exceptional. There are many flaws though, of the 6 IPods I've come into contact with all of them require frequent hardware reboots which isn't well known since most people don't read the manual.(hold home and center button for about ten seconds till apple logo appears) With DRM(digital rights management) on nearly every player these days, you need to choose your player based on the service you want to use. If you get an IPod, the only way to get music is purchased cd's and Itunes for 99 cents a song, which can be very tempting with your credit card info stored on file. My girlfriend racked up almost 200 bucks one month without realizing it. There are many services popping up now which charge a monthly fee, but provide unlimited music to certain players for as long as you stay subscribed. These services are all linked to non-ipod mp3 players though and you need to verify that a player is compatible first. As far as selection and player go, the best combination I've found for a subscription is yahoo music to go. It's 10 dollars a month and the creative zen player is the best runner up to the IPod for space and user interface. The player doesn't have the "hip" factor, but the audio quality kills the ipod. I don't work for yahoo, I'm just getting tired of fixing all my friends IPod's when they break, and it will break at some point. Firmware upgrades help, but the common user overlooks them. Do yourself a favor and check out http://music.yahoo.com/unlimited/togo/ before you buy an IPod.

Wal-Mart may still offer downloads for $88 per song. But that's the price range to expect. iPod is okay, but it is awfully proprietary. You can load your mp3s and your ripped CDs on your iPod, but you can't play songs you downloaded on iTunes on anything other than a PC with iTunes or an iPod.

You might also consider a subscription music plan, where from Yahoo or Napster, you can pay something like $6 a month and download unlimited music. The only catch is, as soon as you quit the monthly fee, all the music that you downloaded goes bye-bye. Oh, and it doesn't work with iPod. You would need to get another mp3 player, like Saanyo.

You might also look into a PVP, a portable video player, because they play video files and mp3s. Buying her this would make you the coolest dad in the world, and she would promise to wait until she gets married.

The iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Computer. Devices in the iPod family provide a simple user interface designed around a central scroll wheel (with the exception of the iPod shuffle). The standard iPod model stores media on a built-in hard drive, while the smaller iPod shuffle and iPod nano use flash memory. Like most digital audio players, an iPod can serve as an external data storage device when connected to a computer.

If it is for your daughter, I'd suggest you go the non-ipod route. There a plenty of other mp3 players out there that are just as good, but at a lower cost. iPods are good if you need accessories and such. There are other music sites besided iTunes that have the same songs and can be used with any device. iTunes is limited to iPods I believe. I personally have 4 iPods, but started with other mp3 players before making the jump.

Ipod is the way to go. To get music for your itun, you either downloaded the music through the itunes music store, from CD'S she already has or if she's already downloads music from limewire or one of the others like it that music can be put into itunes to go onto her ipod.

Just also make sure to make a seperate purchase of the software, that can upload from ipod to computer. Otherwise you will only be able to upload from computer to ipod. (This would only be a problem if the computer ever crashed and windows need to be reinstalled). If you get the software, www,amazon.com has a bunch of them, just search for ipod software. You would be able to get all the music off the ipod and back onto the computer.

Ipods are the latest craze and if you daughter wants one then she will want to fit in with the 'Ipod People'.
When you purchase an Ipod you will get a copy of the music player 'ITunes'. In ITunes you can create playlists and drag and drop the songs to your Ipod.

Ipods come in various forms that are defined due to the size of memory on the Ipod. The memory is the amount of songs you can put on the Ipod.

IPod Mini - 6GB of memory, stores 3000-4000 songs.
IPod Nano - 2GB of memory, stores 1000 songs
IPod Video - Varies between 30GB, 40GB and 60GB and can also store full length videos on them.

IPods play MP3's and the IPod Video plays MP3's and MP4 (A video format).

I reccomend an Ipod to someone who enjoys listening to their music and takes pride in listening to them too.

To check how much an Ipod costs log on to www.imac.com and go to their 'Store'. Alternatively you can purchase one in any electrical goods store.
