The pet shop will put the fish in a suitable bag and should a liquid to reduce stress and top the bag up with air so that the fish have the best start in their new home.
You should also make sure that the bag is not shaken about too much and that you get the fish home asap.
When you get them home remember to put the bag in the water of your tank/pond/bowl for a while to let the water temperature inside the bag match that of the water in the tank/pond/bowl so that the fish doesn't have a shock when you set him free !!

The pet shop will put the fish in a bag with water, so if you're walking from the shop or getting public transport you can just carry them. If you're driving, place the bag carefully on the floor of the car, preferably propped up with something so the bag can't roll around too much!

Here is what I do when the temperatures outside are too extreme. For one, I try to limit my fish shopping to days where the weather isn't too bad or , in the Summer, I do it early.
Then, I take a small soft sided cooler and I put the bag with the fish in it. This way it doesn't get jostled about and the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much from heat or cold, be it AC, heater or weather. If I have to buy fish in the winter time I keep a bag of aquarium temperature water in the cooler while it's empty, so to not to have to put the fish bag inside an ice cold environment. The soft sided cooler makes it nice and dark for them and that reduces stress, since they don't have to watch the world outside their little bag fly by at warp speed.

the shop should put the fish in a plastic bag. From there you carefully carry it where ever you go. Try not to shake it either.

keep them in the bag you got from the store andset that in your tank for about 15 minutes and then without getting any store water into your tank, put some of your water in the bag. let it sit for anoother 15 minutes and then scoop the fish into the tank! dont get the store water in your tank because it may contain diseases. good luck!
