If you are using Windows XP go to "START" and click on Help and Support. Type: "new computer data transfer" and then search for info.
The following is a copy of some information to get you started.

Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard helps you move your data files and personal settings from your old computer to your new one, without having to go through much of the same configuration you did with your old computer. For example, you can take your personal display properties, folder and taskbar options, and Internet browser and e-mail settings from your old computer and place them on the new one. The wizard will also move specific files or entire folders, such as My Documents, My Pictures, and Favorites. Passwords are not moved with program settings when you use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. This is a feature of the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that helps to keep your passwords confidential.

We recommend that you install a virus detection program on the new computer before transferring files over from the old computer. This can help protect your new computer from viruses that may be contained in the files transferred over from your old computer.

Open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Notes

To open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

For new computers, u will not need a 3.5" 1.44 floppy disk drive, as it is nowadays usually needed for maintenance, but there are also alternate ways for maintainance other than floppy disks that can be used when needed. Including USB Flash Drives. If a 2001 computer does have a USB slot, it wont usually have a USB 2.0 slot, so u cant use the full speed of the flash drive on the other computer. You can also use Bluetooth to transfer files between both computers, which is actually a quite faster alternate, but at a higher cost. You will have to buy two bluetooth adapters (there are many types including USB, PCI and PCMIA cards). A USB bluetooth adapter in ma country normally costs $30. But you will be able to create a wireless LAN between two computers called "Personal Area Network" and use it to two-player games over LAN. Windows XP with service pack 2 configures this Connection autiomatically. If u don't have Service Pack 2 downloadit from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/d...

Preferrence:
1. If u want to tranfer files to another computer outside your house, better buy a USB Flash Stick.
2. If u only want to transfer files between the two computers at home, better get the bluetooth adapter.

Yes you can. If you have a CD burner you can burn all your data from your old computer and then use the CD on your new computer and just drag and drop them.

Or you can hook up both computers to a home network and then you can do file sharing and then just access the data directly and move them over to your new computer.

Or you can go to http://www.xdrive.com and use their file hosting site temporarily since they give you up to 5 gigs for free and you can upload all your data from your old computer into that file hosting site. Then you can hook up your new computer to the internet, and download all your data back into your new hard drive.

Another way is to take your old computer's hard drive out, and then connect it to your new computer and use it as a slave drive. You can just map the slave drive and drag the files over into your new hard drive.

There are several ways.

If the drive on the old PC is still running you can stick the old IDE drive into the new pc and either transfer your info like that or just leave the drive in there for extra storage.

If both computers have network card you can setup a network with a cross over cable directly from pc to pc, no router/hub required.

Alternatively, if you've got some technical expertise you could remove the harddrive from the old on and put it in the new one.

If you have little data, use a USB pen to transfer. If you have lots of data, use an external hard drive.

How much data? A USB flash thumb drive could probably do the trick. You can gt 4 GB drives that aren't too much money.

Email them to yourself from your old PC then open them on your new PC.

or if you have a digital camera then you can install it on both PCs and save all your files onto its memory card.

Best way though is to buy a USB pen drive (as long as both your PCs have USB sockets)- this is the most expensive out of the 3 but can be as little as £10.
