A weed is simply a human definition- a plant growing where you don't desire it to. "Weeds" are often good competitors and spread easily, so I suppose you could genetically modify a plant to grow more quickly and develop seeds earlier.

The definition of a weed is a plant in the wrong place. What makes a weed is it's location, not structure or genetic make up. Any crop could be a weed if it seeds itself on your drive way in your lawn, or anywhere else if you didn't plant it there. Last summer i discovered a wild pansy growing in the middle of my patio. It look so pretty, i left it there until it died naturally, but strictly speaking, that was a weed, because it was growing in the wrong place.
