It can start as early as 8 years old, but that's very rare. If it doesn't start by the time a girl is 16, she needs to see a doctor. It continues until menopause, which causes the woman to stop getting her periods and can occur in her 40s or 50s. It's extremely rare for menopause to happen in a womans 30s, but not impossible.
You're more likely to menstruate on about the same schedule as your mother. Starting at around the same age (maybe a little earlier), going through menopause at around the same age, with a period that is like hers in terms of how often it happens, how long it lasts, how heavy it is, and whether you get cramps or other symptoms.

The average age of the first period is about 12 years old. As far as how long not sure if you mean how long a period lasts or when menopause occurs. A period last 5-7 days, and menopause begins on the average around age 50, though some women stop menstruating in their mid-40s, and others continue well into their mid-50s.
