It depends on your design criteria (strength and deflection). What are your predetermined live & dead loads (psf). What is your joist spacing going to be? You may want to be a little more spacific to get a little more information.

Assuming 30 psf of live load ( typical design for sleeping areas) with 24" spacing, the recommended floor joist is a 2 x 12 for a 17'5" span. This is a bit more of a load than you might see on a deck.

If you consider the beams to be similar to a header over a window opening, then the minimum would probably be two 2 x 12's. You are not holding up a second story or a roof but the deck boards and joists are still pretty heavy specially when they are wet.

I have seen several older decks that have significant sag over time just from the weight of the deck boards. I would suggest you not go less than 2 x 12's for the beams and 2 x 10's for the joists. Yes it will cost a bit more but in the long run you will be happier with the finished product.

I think 4x8 should be plenty strong enough,if it still feels a little spongy after you frame it,add a row or two of blocking to help stiffen it up.
2x8 for joists at least.
Good luck on your project.
Have a great day!
