any player off the bench. the backup catcher will often be in the bullpen ready to warm up another pitcher. And usually the teams don't let their wives into the dugout.....the catcher would not be ready because he made the last out or was on base when the last out was made. It does take a minute or two to put the gear on.

Usually it's the backup catcher, but it can be anyone. The regular catcher normally isn't ready if he either makes the third out of the inning or is on base at the time the third out is made. He then needs a couple minutes to put his gear on.

It's usually just another guy off the bench, and mostly its because the catcher makes the last out at the plate and has to put his gear on. I know when its the Mets, their utility man Chris Woodward warms the catcher up if he's not playing.

Usually the backup catcher, but for the Yankees last year, Joe Girardi who was there bench coach, would warm pitchers up because he has catching experience.

Why wouldn't the catcher be ready, what is he making out with his wife in the dugout or something so important that he can't play catch with the pitcher?
