My Metro started doing that - I had to top it up every time I went anywhere... Keep an eye on the colour of the radiator fluid - it should be pale and cloudy yellow, rather than thick pale brown, frothy and gloopy, which mine went towards the end of its life. Also check where the water is going to - it must be going somewhere and if you can't see it...! The water from my rad ended up leaking down the radiator grille and also into the oil which went gloopy too (and vice versa, which is why it went a nasty brown colour). Neither is good, but if you don't get it sorted it could end up costing you more.

It could be head gasket failure, which will be a bit pricey (possibly even getting towards £400 to replace - check the figure with someone who knows), but probably worth it if you're fond of the car and it's not too old. Ask the advice of your local service centre, they should be willing to pop their head under the bonnet for 5 minutes and tell you if they think it's worth fixing... My local one does...

Hasn't anyone ever told you that FIAT means "Fix It Again, Tony!"

Sorry, but my 128 was the biggest piece of junk ever made. I think it came off the assembly line already on the towtruck!

Yes, it sounds like your headgasket. The water is either going out the tailpipe or mixing in with the oil. Either way, it's bad news.

the cylinder head gasket will be blown at cylinder 1 across to the exhaust side and will require skimmed.Ball park price 200/250inc VAT or if handy with tools can be skimmed and gaskets for about 50quid and no more than 4 hours of your own graft.
