Spirit Seeker (Paperback) by Joan Lowery Nixon. 6th thru 9th grade reading levels. The main character Holly finds a Spirit Seeker (Clairvoyant) to help her solve the double murder of her friend's parents.
Spirit Seeker stands 17" tall and features a Plains Indian holding a peace pipe and wearing a peace medal.
Remind you of a movie with Bruce Willis? (6th Sense) The kid who sees "dead people"? In this case he wasn't seeking spirits, they were seeking him.
I worked on an Indian Reservation in Nebraska (The bronze Spirit Seeker is sold in Nebraska's Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History), seeking the Spirit to help follow life's path was a very serious thing to do. It was respected. It was the honorable path.
In an interesting side note, Churches do it. It's called Seeking the Holy Spirit.
Spirit Seekers are, and have been, in every culture and every clime on the face of this planet since the beginning of mankind. In aeons past it was considered holy and sacred. With the pathos of modern times, it is ridiculed and shamed. You choose.
