there are places where a tip is advisable. What is the amount of money that i should tip in places like bars and hotels, lodges and restaurants, resorts, parking valets, etc.? How much is too much or too little? Is it right to tip a cop / police? Does it not amount to bribe?

In my city, the cops DEMAND TIPS as if its is our bounden duty to tip them, like, when they come for verification of address for issue of passports, etc. And nearly every service provider (any service) expects tips, else there is the long face, disgusted looks, hating eyes, etc that one should face. Hence the question.

15% of the bill for the following:
room service & laundry in the hotel, resturants, and any seated eating
10% of the bill for drinks at a bar
parking valets: $1. on pick up & $5 on safe return of your car in a hotel or other establishment that offers valet...a valet at a party you give more ($5 at pick up and $10 at return)
You should also tip the carry-out at the grocery store (i always give enough for a cold drink on a hot day or a hot drink on a cold day)
and if you pick up a pizza in a drive thru window you should give them a dollar for good service
I can understand the need to tip a cop...underpaid and overworked people as they are....i supose a tip should be gifted if you ask for directions or some such thing
*well, if the cops EXPECT a tip give them whatever you give the pizza delivery man
lol, good luck!

Bars it should be like $1-2 per drink. Restaurants, delivery drivers, room service (anywhere you get food) you should tip anywhere between 10-20% depending on how well you liked the service. Valet's I'd say like $3-5, I mean they're going to be driving your car. There's 2 kinds of service providers you should NEVER stiff: Anyone who deals with your food, and anyone who deals with your car. Room service, bell boys maybe a couple of bucks. NEVER a cop, that would definitely be a bribe. Put it this way, if someone provides you with a service, tipping them could be the difference between ok service and great service. I work for a pizza delivery place, and the customers who we know don't tip, we definitely don't rush to get them their pizza.

Well I live in Las Vegas where a lot of people's income is based mainly on their tips so I always tip well. In restaurants I tip 20%, for valets and hotels at least $2-3 or more if they take care of ya. I wouldn't try tipping a cop because you'll probably get yourself a ride in the back of his car for it.

In many parts of the world, a tip is consider a part of the service employees pay. So if you do not tip them, you thought that it was OK that they did not get paid.
The amount varies everywhere. $15 is OK.
There is no such thing as TOO MUCH tip.
Police, law enforcement and government personnel should not receive a tip. (except for information that relates to a crime that you witnessed).

Depends where you are. In the UK you only tip if you get good service and then its 10%.
In the U.S its 18% (I give 20% because I can never work out 18% in my head) and you do it in order to leave the establishment alive whether the service has been good or not!
