Never explained. Part of the story - the predator who attacks for no apparent reason, so there's nothing he could do to diffuse the situation.

They call it 'road-rage' now. He was being an asp, honked a few times to much. So he got hounded back.. and that turned into a bad thing...

...just a movie. Probably happens in real life all the time.
