Searching the web and came up with this. Also, keep records of your serial number and model and any other "identifiers" so you could prove in case your laptop is receovered.

I have heard of a program that resides secretly on the computer and secretly accesses a web address. If you report it stolen to the company the it activates the program to download other traceable details eg, phone numbers email addies to the web site. This was a long time ago and I unfortunately do not remember the name of the service.

There are several things you can do to Identify a laptop as yours. First try using an engraver and put your name on the laptop, choose a spot thats visible upon inspection yet that is hard to scrape the engraving off of (Maybe the underside on a memory cover or battery cover etc.

There are a couple of ways to trace your stolen labtop. I recommend you try Absolute Software's Computrace. (http://www.absolute.com/public/homeoffice/computer-security-software.asp)
"Computrace for Home & Home Office is laptop computer security software which tracks and recovers stolen laptops – guaranteed up to $1000. With Computrace, you will have the computer protection you need for your valuable laptop." -- Absolute Software
"Computrace LoJack for Laptops is a recovery service that enables law enforcement to recover stolen laptops. When your laptop is protected with this service, software installed on your laptop works behind the scenes to silently and securely contact our Monitoring Center, and if stolen, report its location using any Internet connection.
When your laptop is stolen, our Recovery Team tracks its location and partners with local law enforcement to recover and return your laptop to you. Computrace LoJack for Laptops is the ultimate tool for mobile theft protection!" -- Absolute Software.
The software is briefly mentioned in PC World.
"When a device is in the wrong hands, protecting the data in it is no longer Mission: Impossible" -- PC World (http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,125520,00.asp)

reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.
Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.
