Windows Media Player can burn movie and audio files to cd/dvd only with an additional plugin installed (either from NERO or WinOnCd).
If you have XP, then you'll need extra-plugins only for burning dvd's, since burning/erasing cd's is already included... (just insert the blank cd, select the files you need to copy to the cd, copy them to the cd, same as you copy any files and then click Write This files to CD).
It's very easy...
It's recommended though to use additional software for this. Not only it can improve the writing speed but it will give you other facilities, like creating albums, editing your personal dvd-video, save dvd/cd images and much more.
For this, you could try NERO (which I consider the best) and ROXIO (known as WinOnCD).

Copying CDs.
1st you need to check your cd-rom is marked CD RW. next you need software that is capable of copying cds. i recommend nero, although it is possible using windows media player. using windows media player; insert cd, then select copy from CD, once this is completed the songs will now be on your computer.
you then select the "copy to cd" button and chose your songs you wish to burn.
where as copying dvds can be more difficult as you need specific software. you should practice with cds 1st.

starting from the basics ..... first thing to burn cd/ dvd you need a cd or dvd writer. then there r many softwares ( NERO is one of the very good softwares available for it) for buning u cant directly copy paste (untill unless u have a software like InCd). then according to your choice of data like audio, mp3 , data select the option and burn. these softwares are very easy to use. try donloadin it online from download.com or serch them online on yahoo.com

in media player, just go to your music library, right-click on the song you want to add, then select "add to burn list" when your list is complete, click on the burn tab, put a blank cd in, and click "start burn"
