Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles, hence the name Great. The island of Great Britain has three countries in it - England, Scotland, and Wales. Ireland (south and north) is not part of Great Britain, it is on another island. Ireland (both North and South) were part of the United Kingdom until Irish Independence, but at that time, Northern Ireland remained part of the UK. Great Britain though, is geographical, not political - if any of the countries of Great Britain seceded from the United Kingdom, they would still be on the island of Great Britain.
