Freemasonry is a fraternal organization whose membership is held together by shared moral and metaphysical ideals and—in most of its branches—by a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.[1]

Depends who you believe (or, rather, who you want to believe).
History indicates that they are the remnants of what was once the Knights Templar, a group of warrior monks who founded their own order around the time of the second crusade.
According to Roman Catholicism, this is a group of people who have set out to destroy the teachings of the church... But then again, it was the Catholic Church (with the assistance of King Philip of France) that set about destroying the Knights Templar (Possibly because they had gotten very wealthy, and had a lot of devoted and trusting friends and followers).
According to many around the world, they are a charitable organisation of aging (predominantly) men trying to hold onto some old theories of honour and justice.... Just look at some of the truly great people who have been members over the years, and try to find many who you would not respect.
According to the media they are a secret organisation, whose real purpose is unknown...(a secret organisation that clearly identifies its meeting halls, and advertises its meetings in the local newspapers?) Can non-members attend. No, but the same is true for company board meetings, or police briefings.. if fact, can I come round to your house with a few mates, sit in your lounge and discuss your household budget and with you ...No? thought not!)
Ask the Masons... They will tell you that they are a group of people who share high ideals of morality, charity and respect... all based upon ancient concepts and tenets passed down over centuries (supposedly from the Knights Templar and others).
...You never hear of the Freemasons pushing a political or theological view or opinion.. You never see them 'spinning' the press or teh media.. They don't need to! They have little to say, and no one to say it to.
Are they Jewish? Yes! Christian?, Yes! Moslem? Yes! ...all of these...and more. but, strangely enough... they don;t fight, or even argue, about who might, or might not, have the "right" God!
What is Freemasonry? Imagine a golf club with no greens, a Tennis club with no courts, a theatrical company with no stage, or a Football ground with no tribal colours... Then take the people and allow them to talk about what aspects of their lives, belliefs and thoughts they share in common, rather than what differences they have... Then you have something that comes close to Freemasonry... (Unfortunately they go on to ruin it by wearing silly costumes)
