Appeal to a wide customer base...stock pop, world, folk, classical, jazz, I know a lot of classical musicians that are also Brittany Spears, Coldplay and Radiohead fans
Buy and sell used cds. This will bring in a lot of business, people who don't necessarily have the money or desire to buy new cds will often end up spending as much or more on used cds because they are cheaper. Also there is a small but loyal customer base that still looks for music on vinyl.
Ambience! What kind of crowd are you trying to attract. If it is a club crowd, you want the lights and the music and the "club feel". If it is a "hippie" crowd, you want tie dye and incense. If it is a appealing to all ages, then your generic Borders feel is good.
Make friends with local artists and sell their music. Again a good way to bring customers in from off the street. If you have room in your store, get them to have signings there, cd release parties, etc.
Basically, the more people you have in your store, the more sales you will have. Create frequent buyer clubs, give them 10% off their 10th purchase. For used cds, give it to them free. Have perks like coffee, Be creative.

Well, other than the obvious (to make money), I would enjoy having a music store since I love music. Also it would be nice being able to choose which CDs (all of my favorite CDs) and meeting people that have the same taste in music as me.

stock up, get well-versed on different music styles and singers, have a helpful attitude. oh and also get to personally know customers and their tastes. try to have a music system with headphones so buyers can hear the music they wanna buy
