I am moving to the New London, CT area. I would like some suggestions of where to look for houses to buy.?

It's just me and my husband. We don't need anything huge, but we have a dog, so we need a home that we can have a fenced yard. a condo won't do. We'd like to live in a safe area, close to the happenings. Are there any bad areas we should avoid?
