I know us Brits make lots of jokes about it not being 'real football' but I would genuinely like to know how it got the name, because seeing as the ball isn't actually kicked very often, it's not an obvious name for it.

There are many different games of football.

Association football
Rugby Football
American Football
Austrailian Rules Football.

All are based on "football" a game played in the middle ages in England where rival villages used every means possible to get a pigs bladder into a certain village. People enjoyed this thorughly violent game and it became more civilised and was eventually played at public schools.

Each public school had different rules for football. Rugby school had different rules to the Cambridge based schools. Rugby football stems from when William Webb Ellis ran with the ball in hand, although most team in the country allowed anyone to handle the ball before then.

Assoctiation football is based on a set of rules drawn up in Cambridge so Cambridge based schools could play each other.

American football is the version which developed in America after colonisation. And the same is true for Aussie Rules.
