The main blood types are A, AB, B, and O. These blood types are fromed due to a specific type of protein found on the red blood cells. A type blood has A protein, while B has B protein. O does not contain any protein so the O stands for zero. AB contains both A and B proteins. Along with this there is the Rh positive and negative type. This is independent of the ABO grouping so you can have all the ABO types plus the positives and negatives as well. So far ther are 8 distinct types. Along with this there is a M and N type. This is more subtle and it is usually not tested for. So now we have 16 different types possible.

The ABO blood groups system is widely credited to have been discovered by the Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner in 1901;[1] he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for his work. Subsequently it was found that Czech serologist Jan Janský had independently pioneered the classification of human blood into four groups in 1907, but Landsteiner's independent discovery had been accepted by virtually the whole scientific world while Janský remained in relative obscurity. His classification is, however, still used in Russia and states of former USSR (see below). Landsteiner described A, B, and O; Decastrello and Sturli discovered the fourth type, AB, in 1907.

Also, there is an Rh factor, which is the "negative" or "positive." Some groups can receive "non-matching" blood, but that is far too complicated to go into here.

you can find A, B, AB, O those are the blood groups you can find in man, the letters indicate the antigen presenting molecules that can be found on the red blood cell surface. another distinction is the - next to them (A R-), this indicates the rhesus factor, and is also used as a match for the blood group

generally there are four types depending on the antigen you have-A,B,O and AB.there is also Rh factor which determines if its positive or negetive.blood group testing is an easy experiment so do try it in your school lab to understand it more clealy.

technically there are more than four: AA, BB, AO, BO, AB, and OO, so that's six, but more generally there are thought to be four, A, B, AB, and O. there is also the Rh factor, which can be positive or negative.
