You can get some really good deals by hitting the pawn shops.
You will want to reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything, but if you have the software available, this is actually a pretty good way to go.
I've recently helped a friend do the same thing, we ended up with a Dell with 512MB RAM and an 60GB hard drive for $250.
Definately stick with a name brand such as Dell -- not so much for the qualitity, but so that you can contact them with the service tag number and get all of the information about what's installed in the machine so that you can properly configure the drivers, etc.
Look into the pawn shops -- you might also get a good deal on a laptop by checking the computer repair stores in your area.
Many times, people will bring them in to get fixed, the store fixes them, but if the person doesn't pay the bill, the store keeps the laptop and sells it for what it cost to make the repair.
It's a good idea to print up a few "flyers" to leave with the store managers ... when one comes up, they'll give you a call.

www.ebay.com (.co.uk if in england) but you will be lucky to get one for £200 or less and BTW don't go for the "I'm not actually selling this laptop, but if you pay me I will give you a link to this site" rubbish. Expect to pay £100 - £200 for a pentium 3, 2 and 1. And about £200+ for a pentium 4, athlon, and more for 64 bit proccessors. Make sure the battery holds a good charge (ask seller question if in doubt before you bid) Batterys range from £50-150 (on e-bay) so be carefull, unless you want a laptop you have to have constantly plugged into the mains

You can buy a laptop fairly resonable at Best Buy. Try looking when they are bringing out the newer models. They want to get rid of the older ones. The older ones are still new just not as new and you can get a really nice one quite cheap with a good amount of memory and its centrino. Toshiba's a good brand.

Don't go buying computers for ficticious characters from Russia who claim to only have use of expensive internet cafes. Its a trick and they are out for what they can get. You will never actually meet them.
