I always used to leave a cup of Baking Soda out in my basement. Baking Soda is great at absorbing odors. If you can find the source of the smell the best thing is to treat the source. If the air is damp try putting a dehumidifier down there. If the walls are seeping you may have to seal them. If you have a washer and dryer down there, make sure the washer isn't leaking and leave the lid up when finished doing a load so the excess moisture can evaporate. Also, if you have windows...open them. Letting fresh outside air in is always a great way to freshen stale inside air!
Hope this helps...

Depends. If you're basement has a dirt floor, then you probably need to replace the dirt. If it's cement floor with cement walls, Clorox should do the trick (wear a mask). A fan at the top of the steps periodically will help bring in fresh air. Get some plant lights and put some houseplants down there. They will also help keep the air fresh.

Remove any water soaked stuff. Remove everything from the basement, make a solution of one pint of bleach to five gallons of water. Using gloves brush on this solution until you have covered the whole basement. Asuming this is fully concreted wash until the smell goes away. I recommend leaving to dry for awhile. After it is completely dry, you may paint with a latex paint this tends to keep moisture out. I am also asuming that there are no existing water leaks, if so the leaks have to be sealed.I hope this helps.

Clean with bleach water, also buy a dehumidifier, if the outside walls are concrete or block and unfinished, clean the walls well and paint with Dryloc.

Use the Febreeze Air Effects. or Oust. FInd the ones that say they kill the bacteria in the air, rather than just masking the smell. I personally use Febreeze Clean Air.

I would take a shop broom and scrub with a mix of the laundry detergent Tide and plenty of water on carpet or concrete.

Sprinkle around Sodium Bicarbonate, it is very cheap,
leave it for a few days then vacuum it up.
