Tachometers are generally found in high performance cars but the sporty look have them even appearing in cars with automatic transmissions!

The obvious answer is to tell the drive the speed of the engine. The complex answer is why the driver needs to know that...

With a manual transmission, the driver decides when to shift gears. If he is driving normally, trying to save gas, he won't care too much about the engine speed as he is shifting into higher gears pretty much very early.

If you know the performance curves for your engine/transmission, you would know just when your power peaks and when performance is at its maximum. Something that a racer might need to know to win. Anyway, every engine has it's limit and you want to ensure the engine rpm stays below the redline of the engine.

My 1999 Acura Integra GS/R had a VTEC engine in it that had a redline of 8100 rpm. I could cruise down the highway at 60 miles per hour behind some truck but then drop it into 3rd gear, mash on the gas and that VTEC would come alive! Within a few seconds I am passing the truck at 80 miles per hour and climbing quickly. The engine was doing exactly what it was designed to do but the engine rpm is increasing dramatically at that speed with the transmission in 3rd gear. Watching the tachometer, I would be sure to keep the engine rpm below the redline (8100) and ensure I shifted to 4th and finally to 5th well below that redline limit.

Many engines have redlines much lower than that and I recommend you find out what the rpm limit is for your car too.

Good luck!

A tachometer is a device used for measuring the speed of a moving body or substance (from Greek: tachos = speed, metron = measure). The most common form of the tachometer is one that measures the speed of a rotating shaft, as in an engine or other machine.

Hope I answered the question ;)

Tachometer not only gives you the speed of the engine in RPM(Revolutions Per Minute) but also helps you to change the gears so as to give you the Optimum Mileage.

tachometers are useful in telling you how smooth or hard your engine is running...the higher RPM (which teh tachometer rates) you run at, the more gas you're using.

when you use a tach it generally reads your RPM's much better.Just for the simple fact it is hooked up right to your distributor and is more accurate for the simple fact it don't have to go through the computer in your car to tell the stock tach what to read when i put mine in my 93 civic my tach on the dash reads right at one rpm the one in the dash reads 3/4 so after market tach is more accurate and don't be cheap you get what you pay for spend a little to make sure it is a good tach not a cheap picece of **** from auto zone i suggest AUTO METER hope the info helps happy racing from streetracer93civic in HOUSTON

No but it looks cool. It might also warn you if your transmission is starting to loose it's performance by shifting at different revs than usual. I have had cars with tach's in them that were automatic there their for show mostly it showe when my turbo kicked in.
