First - before you begin to diagnose yourself or anyone else.
Bipolar is not a disease.
Since you didn't mention a precedence of getting totally crazed and wired up before sad times...we can rule out Bipolar (also known as Manic/Depressive) disorder.
People have emotional lows for many reasons - some contributing factors can be: the time of year, diet, lack of exercise, significant events, or significant recollections.
There are social contributors (no current partner, no time for social life, or no significant social interactions) as well as biological (hormonal). Self esteem, self-confidence, and historical factors of development play a huge role as well.
The absolute worst thing people can do when they are really sad...is worry about why....and why they don't know "why".
Some very very simple strategies to change the sadness can include things like:
- choose to be happy...or at least choose not to be sad.
- change clothes to "happy clothes"
- change rooms
- change music
- change scenery
- brighten the lighting
- call a friend
- take a walk
- share a smile with passers-by
(not stop them to talk - just a smile)
If the sadness comes to the point of disrupting an average day, preventing a regular schedule of activities, or forces the sad person to call in sick to work...then it's time to see a doctor for a little help.

Depression is the most common disorder of the current age.
Sometimes depression can be caused byt event like the loss of a relationship or a death.
It can also be a characteristic of a person in their make up, I am prone to depression. My father was the same.
It does not mean you are bad or unnatural to suffer depression. Its one extra challange in your life.
How best to cope :
* sit in the sun, feel the warmth,
* meet with people, talk, enjoy them
* break some habits in your life, do things differently
* talk to you doctor, they can help
* do exercise, it will cheer you up
* be aware of how you are, care for yourself
hope this helps..
