Why did they choose to play with blue?

We use "azzurri" to name our national teams players (not only football), because of the colour they wear. Azzurro (singular of azzurri) was the royal family (Savoia) colour. It wasn't changed when the Italian Republic was born in 1946, because for too many years "azzurri" identified Italian national teams

The Italian soccer team is called Azzuri. In Italian, Azzuri means "blue". That is why they are called Azzuri, because their team colour is blue.
