Also, and additional book suggestion on estate landscape design would be truly appreciated.

I have the Better Homes guide, and it's good. Also try the American Horticultural Society. They have a coffee table book that I got as a gift a few years ago that is also quite good.

My favorite is the Reader's Digest New Illustrated Guide to Gardening in Canada. It's a fairly large book with easy to understand directions on just about anything you're looking for, from perennials to vegetables, trees to bulbs. At the end of each section, the book gives you a list of recommended plants to grow along with care and maintenance, varieties, size. There's a section on plant disorders and diseases and how to treat them. There's even a section on types of weeds and their control. It's really and excellent book. You didn't mention where you were from. I'll assume there's a US version of this book as well.

I 've had a book for years...Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Gardening. Look for gardens in your area and ask the homeowner. Most gardeners are extremely proud of their work and would probably be very willing to give you tips. This may be more useful than a book.

I live in Texas and we have quite a few local plant people who specialize in plants that are best suited to our area. There are so many variables in climate and soil conditions, that a national publication is not always best. I think you get better advise when you consult a regional expert.
