If you plan your trip properly you are going to have a superb holiday!
I suggest you think about your preferences e.g. wildlife, beaches, scenery, City or countryside etc. The city which offers all the above, plus much more is Cape Town. You could spend weeks there, without seeing half of the sights. A good website is Cape Town Tourism, look it up on Google. You need to hire a car, public transport is poor and unsafe. If you want to see proper wildlife, you must visit one of the many Game Parks. I strongly recommend this, its a proper 'African experience'. I could tell you lots more, as I offer a free advice service to potential tourists, but I cannot quote my email here(rules). Write again in this forum, I will look out for it.

It is an amazing place! Where are you going in South Africa? Capetown is one of the most beautiful regions I have ever seen. Durban is nice place to play in the ocean. Johannesburg is mean and crime ridden. Try a samosa. They are really good. Try to spend some time in the poorer areas. The tourist traps are fun and safe but the real Africa is in the bush. You will fall in love with the children. They are so beautiful and smiley. Watch out for crime. It can be very dangerous to be a foreigner. I had a friend who was showing me around town. He carried a gun. In the good areas he would leave it in the car. In the bad areas he would carry it concealed on his person. In the worst he would display it for all to see.

Two gentlemen from USA (John and Gerry) were bike-touring within Africa but when they came to South Africa they spent more time. They compiled a very detailed report about South Africa, even making comparism(sp??) of South Africa to other countries in Europe and America. Just take your time and read it. It will tell you everything you need to know about South Africa, even things I don't want you to know.

Beautiful people, rich traditions and colorful cultures. Extraordinarily beautiful beaches. Breathtaking mountains. Fauna and flora as you can only dream of. Really inexpensive country compared to most tourist resorts and places.

South Africa is a country that is full of history and powerful stories of heroes and villains. An adventure in every city or town awaits you to uncover it. Secrets lie beneath the ocean and in caves so spectacular it'll mesmerize you.

It is a country where proud citizens welcome people from all walks of life and all color. After being held captive by prejudice for years, this is probably our best achievement...to forgive. This country can take you to cloud nine and the next day even further.

Then again it will break your heart in more ways than one. The struggle of the people is one to admire and feel ashamed about.

All in all...it is a country where you can see the world in one trip.

I am South African, and can truly say, South Africa is a stunning place... you can visit all around the country and be safe, if you only adhere to the local rules of safety.

The best thing for you to do, is to try and meet with a local there, and for them to show you around, most people are friendly and open to visitors, although there are communities within SA that are not at all welcoming to visitors.

If it is nature parks you like, a definite must is: Kruger National Park (Big 5 and everything you wish to see to do with wildlife) Addo Elephant Park (if you are a big Elephant lover) Augrabies (if you like waterfalls, and buck etc) Try go see the Drakensburg mountains...

There is also the West Coast, there are plenty of small fishing villages, they are stunning to visit, and to meet with the locals. You should have a good laugh, at trying to understand what they are saying, but they are a very down to earth type of people. There is the "Garden Route" (along Knysna and Mossel Bay etc) there are lots of other towns in this area, and lots of scenery, especially if you have your own transport, and can take drives along the scenic routes.

There are the beaches, which are stunning, also the Karoo... very hot, in Summer, but something that is a sight to see. Especially if you can get friendly with some of the locals, you will enjoy a good view of the farms, and wildlife running free there. And also a bit of SA hospitality with the "braai's" (BBQ) which is something SA can boast about.

yes, crime is high, but as I said, try and head to what locals do. I lived in SA for 25years, but now working abroad in Taiwan, and not once did any crime come my way. I love SA, and miss the places... you really must try and tour as much as you can, go off the route marked by tour companies, and hook up with a local, that is willing to take you around. Trust me, that is the best way... you will experience more that way.....
