Hate to be really boring but there is actually a straightforward answer - the answer is the egg came first.

Given species arise through genetic mutation, the chicken species arose through another species mutating i.e. the parents of the first chicken weren't actually chickens but another species whose mutation gave rise to their eggs containing the first ever chicken.

Well its like asking what came first, a human or the zygote. One can not exist without the other, but if you study an egg, you realize it needs a hen to keep it warm and take care of it; the zygote needs to be inside the female in order to grow and turn into an embryo. The hen would have to come first in order to take care of the egg, or the egg would not survive.

P.S God made the hen off the bat. lol

The hen came first. The egg is a method of reproducing the species. So the egg had to come from the hen.

Not really a philosphical answer, but one from deductive logic.

Guess what? T-rex is the chicken's closest relative! So dinosaurs came first!

But other than that....I'd say then first thing mutated into something that had eggs.

But that's scientific.....sorry.

hen...from thousands of years, it must've mutated from something else that doesn't have eggs :)
