well this is a rather an interesting subject... 1st of all it has NOTHING to do with satanism, that is a completely different religion... voodoo is actually the western slang for voudo... this is a religion that has many scisms... like you say 'christian' is an open term for roman catholic protestant ect. voudo is a very old religion that has strong roots in africa, but with the slave trade it became previlent in new orleans and that part of america around the bahamas... im not quite sure about the exact origin of the 'voodoo doll', but there is also a 'puppet' that is used in old celtic magic which is used in the same way... but with this one you put 3thorns, a hair and a picture in it then sew it up... hope this has been some help

"voodoo dolls" pre date "voodoo" by many many cenuries, they oprerate on the principle of contagion. a thing which was once part of the whole (hair, saliva, blood etc.) remains part of the whole being and by manipulating that part one can affect the whole being even at great distances we find this principle of magic in use in mesoptamia, where the wizard or preist would inscribe the name of a demon (names being a part of the creature) in a clay disk, with the name repeated again and again in an inwardly curving spiral to trap the deamon's spirit.

voodoo itself is a combination of african tribal beliefs and Catholic religion, It began as the Catholics tried to convert tribal africans, then as slaves they brought it to the south of the us and the islands south of Florida.
