If you have a plug in on that wall, it may turn on and off the power to that plug. To test plug something in, then flip the switch.

THIS IS WHAT IT IS.
the old home owner had ur bed room lights hooked up to what is call a 3 way switch..this means that the lights can be controled from 2 locations, that way u dont have to get out of bed to turn on or off the lights
he probabbly changed the switch and didnt remember how to hook up the wires.
its a common problem.

It could be for a couple of things - in hospital there were lots on the ceiling - and they were items to be plugged in so that people would not be dealing with leads everywhere on the floor and they could be tied back and managed easier overhead - so nursing staff told me. There is a good chance it was for an old light or ceiling fan.

There is another way - get someone to go up into the manhole and see if the wire has been taped off or if it goes somewhere - you should be able to trace it that way - don't let them play with the wiring or they may just get a very nasty shock.

Is there a light socket on that wall somewhere. Plug in a lamp. Turn the lamp on and then turn the switch on...that could be the reason, so you can easily find the light at night.

The light switch is probably for half switched receptacles for lamps. The receptacles to either side of your bed will be controlled by this switch. More than likely, only the top or bottom of each receptacle will be controlled by this switch and the opposite will always be on.

it most likely controls half of one of the outlets in your room plug a lamp into each switch with the light on and see if it works, repeat with switch in both directions it may also be a ventilation system that turns on the top floor bathroom fan as most new houses have this now

When I bought my house I ripped out the flourescent 70's valance lighting over the window and therefore one light switch does nothing now.

Sometimes wall plugs are wired to switches. Plug lamps into the wall plugs and turn off the switch. If the lamp goes off then you have your answer.

it probably went to something that the previous owner decided to get rid of. they may have had a fan or another light or something and removed that but didn't remove the switch. did you check to see if it affects you outlets?
