i don't see as often as i would like it at all since it is the summer so i don't know when i would get my next chance plus i don't want to lose her to some other guy especially if i had a chance

Of course not~ I think it's actually a good way since the conversation is not face to face it's not as hard for you to open your mouth, if you are shy. Maybe it's because i am more introverted, I always find it more comfortable to have IM conversations instead of phones with people I just met. Internet's good stuff.
