I don't use itunes but would like to purchase something similar to an ipod that will allow me to store music from my computer (mainly from Windows Media Player). What are some good products and what do I need to keep in mind when purchasing such items?

Nokia 6630, a phone plus mp3 player with good sound quality and expandable memory. You don't have to worry about carrying the excess stuff (ipod), your phone will do it all.

I have a 1 GB Creative MuVo N200. It stores 17 hours at 128 kbps (CD quality), has no moving parts, takes a regular AAA battery (I use rechargeables), and my comp thinks it is a hard disk. Any file I want to put on it goes on - anything I want to copy from it I can.

Apple deserves credit for slick marketing, but screwing the consumer with their battery replacement program (ROFL!) and proprietary media issues make the iPod a bad idea for an end user.

If the cell phone coming in the mail didn't have an integrated mp3 player, I'd be looking at a Creative, iRiver, or Dell player.

My wife has an Ipod and I won a free 4gig Iriver. I like my Iriver just as much as I liked using her Ipod. Iriver suggests using Napster and says you can't use Itunes.....but you can. You have to download your tracks from Itunes, then burn them to a CD, then rip them from the CD using windows media player, then sync them to your Iriver. I just use Napster.....same price for everything anyway. I figured out the Itunes thing while trying to get the music off of my wife's Ipod that I wanted, w/out having to re-purchase it at napster.

To be totally honest, there isn't one. If you're gonna look for an MP3 player, then go with the iPod. There isn't an alternative.

I think ipod's are over-rated. I have purchased an i-river and they work just as well
