Yes, just make sure that the bucket you are dumping the water in is lower than the tank.

Oh yes ... get a gravel siphon from the petstore. It's not very expensive and much easier then scooping. Also it is best to use a siphon because it can grab all the decaying food and dirt from the bottom of the tank.
Another plus is the water at the bottom of the tank may be less ideal for fishies. Example: When oxygen is limited in the tank you'll see fishies swimming near the top (where the better water is) ... even if it's not they're "zone" to swim in.
Highly recommend it.

Yes, all of the above answers are correct. If you want to save yourself some money, get an empty mineral water / soda bottle, cut off the bottom and put the siphon tube (The part in the tank) in to where the cap should be. This will acta as a gravel cleaner as the gravel will only go about half way up before falling down, the dirt will all go in to the siphon and in your bucket to be thrown away.

Syphoning is WAY better than scooping the water out. I used to scoop out the water with a bucket, then I used a plastic tube. I had to suck the water through the tube to get the syphon started and I wound up with fish-water in my mouth a few times, so i don't recommend it.
now i use one of those gravel pumps from the pet store, it works way better plus it cleans debris out of the gravel. that's the best way to go.

Syphoning is the right mathod to remove the water. But never change more than 75% of water, at any one time.

yes. you just need a bucket and a length of plastic tubing. put the bucket lower than the aquarium ans stick one end of the tube in the water. give one or two good hard sucks on the end of the tube that is not in the water and then quickly put that end in the bucket. the water might not come instantaneously, but don't suck more than needed or you end up with a mouth full of fish poopy water.
A benefit to cleaning using this method is that you can use the end of the tube that is in the aquarium as a little vaccuum ans sucks a lot of the scum up off the rocks. It is a handy method if you just want to do a quick cleaning and weren't planning on taking out your rocks or marble to clean them.

Most pet stores will sell a gravel cleaner. It siphons the water out. Shove it into the gravel after the siphon is started and you'll get all the grime out of the gravel.

Yes! My fiance has a device which sipons off the water and cleans the gravel too, kind of like a vacuum cleaner!
