Yes, my mom's fish used to eat their babies. Here is what you do. If your fish has babies again, get a breeding net, they even sell these at Wal-Mart and they are not expensive. You put the momma fish in the net and leave only the babies in the tank, they need the room to grow. Or you can get another aquarium for the mom to stay in. If you do not separate them, the momma fish or any other fish you have in the tank WILL eat the babies. Next time separate them.
Good Luck.
Hope this helped.

Most animals will unfortunately eat their young if they are scared or starving. For fish, it is best to research their mating habits. Many fish will eat their babies in an attempt to protect them, considering all a fish has is a mouth to contain things in. So, that means, that when it has babies, the young must be kept separate from the adults in a breeding net. Those can be purchased at any pet store and they hang on the inside of the tank. Other fish just need to be well fed on a specific diet to keep them from eating the young.
And there's always the possibility that the babies got sucked into the filter.

No its not normal. Probably the babies you saw was aborted by the mother due to stress or bad water conditions. These babies are weak and probably succumbed. I have tanks where there are babies born everyday and survive.. for more than 10 years. There are so many fish that I have to give them away.
For the skeptics, I have a community tank where I have had Tetras, Barbs and Kribensis breed and I have had to remove the grown fish that were crowding the tank!
If mothers ate their babies in nature, animals would have died out by now!

You don't say what type of fish you have. But some fish are mouth brooders and will hold their young in their mouth to protect them. Are you sure this is not what is going on?

You didn't say what type of fish it is...
they have dispositions in variety, just
like humans. Stress can do it, or
extreme change in environment.
Also: how large is your tank?
That could also be a factor.
