The *most* is hard to pick...have been blessed with several. Jerry, a border collie cross, was dumped at the farm and quickly adopted me. For the next 15 years he was my shadow. He'd chew through ropes, wood walls and charge through a 3-4" space in a partly open door and track me. It wasn't uncommon to try penning him up to go to town on the horse and a couple miles up the road he'd come running up behind me - someone had opened the door. Or he'd chew through a rope to come up behind me at a frend's house - not good cause they had a Dobe and he and Jerry hated each other. Both awesome dogs - they just hated each other and would fight every time they crossed paths. Neither one really won but it made some tough things and trying every trick in the book to break up dog fights. Jerry was also my hero - I was about 10 and feeding the cows - large 1500#+ Charolais and one cow, Blue, was trying to reach the hay and had me pinned. Then the other cows thought she was getting something and pressed in too - I was up against the concrete feeder and losing my footing - yelling in vain as everyone else was in the house. The cows weren't being mean - they were just trying to eat and my hits and smacks did not even make them flinch.Suddenly they all started backing up fast and I grabbed the feeder before going down under their feet...to find Jerry in the feeder wagging his tail happily at finding me. Another time the cows got out in the corn field and we were putting them back...all were in the field except one who decided to make a break for freedom - she turned and charged at me and I froze. She was about 100 feet away and a black and white streak intercepted effectively enough that she ran back into the field she was supposed to be in. Some years later same cow was corneed in the barn and came at me - Jerry drove her back again giving me the small amount of time to get up the haystack to safety. He hurt his shoulder that time. He was about 15 when he was 'helping' my sister feed cows - by this time it was more like sit at the gate and watch, but he had to be out there with stock - and he laid down whimpering a little and was gone. The tears shed by the whole family were countless and a grave was dug with a tree marking the memory of him. He died in 1981 and I still miss him - he's the reason I have border collies. He and Joe, the pony I had (we were quite the trio) were both very very special and will never be replaced.
