Ruskin Bond - A room on the roof - (memory may be faulty; read this ten years ago)
A young boy from an elite background (got the feeling he wasnt too Indian but will have to look anew thru the eyes of an adult to understand) runs away from home, ends up befriending some very indian children of his age, taking up a job as a tutor to a boy nearly of the same age and falling for his pupil's mother who ultimately dies in a car crash. This is a story of coming of age when that was a new concept. made enjoyable reading and I have always gone back to it over the years even if its only to read parts of it.

R.K Narayan - English Teacher - About an Indian English Teacher: an Idealist and romantic one. He is married and has a little daughter and story starts with the family coming together in a new house. also a story of his reaching maturity and how Susila, his wife helps him in every way, even though she is not half as "educated" as he is. She was his life, love, and world. She was also his guru in matters of life. There are two other people who can lay claim to this tho to a lesser extent. His daughter, and her school master. Revolving around a few eccentric characters, it's entertaining but you have to be a little patient (at least i had to) Not a bad book really. Very indian!! just like Swami and Friends which is about a boy called Swami and his escapades. That might actually be more interesting to read first. but depends on your taste..
