What’s Acne?

Acne is a term that’s used to describe whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. (You may well recognize slang terms like spots, or zits). Most teenagers get the type of acne called acne vulgaris, which can show up on the face, neck, shoulders, back, and chest. Skin pores contain oil glands which naturally lubricate your skin and hair. But sometimes if a pore gets clogged beneath the skin with excess oil and bacteria, the dreaded acne is caused...

Whiteheads happen when a pore gets clogged, closes, and then bulges out. If a pore gets clogged but stays open, the top may darken and you've got a blackhead. A pimple happens when dead skin and bacteria work their way under live skin. This leads to a small infection that makes your skin look red.

What Causes Acne?

Although everyone is different, acne is usually caused by the build up of oil and dead skin in a pore. This build up of oil and dead skin is caused because of:

Natural hormones. These are particularly active in your teens.
Plugged skin. Lots of skin cells can close the oil glands or pores, creating blackheads or whiteheads, (as mentioned earlier).
Bacteria. Bacteria can easily infect oil glands and pores and grow very quickly.
Family background. If you have acne, your kids are more likely to have it too.
How To Reduce An Acne Problem

You shouldn’t squeeze, pick, scratch, or rub your skin as it makes the problem worse, and it might even cause scarring. Regularly shampoo your hair, and try to keep it off your face if possible - especially at night.
Keep a food diary to work out if you are one of the few people whose acne gets worse if they eat certain things.
Exercise regularly to get the old blood flowing, and make sure you get a wash as soon after as possible.
Avoid unnecessarily touching your face.
If possible, try to minimize your stress levels.
Avoid getting sunburned.
Change your wash cloth every day, as bacteria can grow on damp cloth.
Wash your face twice a day with a gentle soap like Dove or Simple.
Always rinse really well with lots of water.
Only wear makeup on special occasions, and then make sure you remove it completely.
Granular facial scrub can make acne worse by aggravating the skin.

1. CLEANSING

Women who wear make-up should carry out a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturing each evening, as well as washing the face in the morning. Cleansing will remove old make-up and the grime and grease that have been accumulated during the day.

Remove mascara with a cotton bud dipped in eye-dipped in eye-cleansing lotion. To make the job easier keep your hair off your face.
Remove the eyeshadow by gently wiping it off with a pad of clean cotton wool moistened with eye-cleansing lotion.
Pour a little face cleansing cream into the palm of one hand and dab it generously over the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks---using two fingers of the other hand.
Massage the cream into the skin, starting under the throat, using a gentle upward motion.
Continue massaging the cream up to the forehead, using the fingertips.
Gently massage the cream from the eyes to the nose.
Massage cream back over the chin, which is particularly prone to blackheads. Use the index finger.
Remove the cream from the face with tissue pads in each hand. Start under the chin and work over the cheeks and on to the forehead

2. TONING

Toners remove all traces of dirt, make-up or cleanser that remain after cleansing.

Immediately after cleansing apply toner to the forehead and cheeks on a pad of corron wool
Apply the toner to the crevices around the nose.
Apply the toner to the crevices around the chin.

3. MOISTURIZING

Without moisture, the skin will not remain smooth and supple. The face is exposed to the drying effect of the weather, so moisturisers -- which form a film over the skin -- contain and augment the natural moisture.

Using the tips ofthe fingers, dot moisturising cream lightly all over the face.
Press the fingers of both hands into the centre of the forehead and work the cream slowly outwards. Pat the cream gentlyaround the eyes.
Work the cream around the jawline, chin and mouth with the middle fingers of both hands.
Massage the cream over the throat with alternating hands, using upward strokes from collar-bone to chin.

Try to use this product called Acne Free. It's cheaper than Proactiv and works just as good. It's available in grocery stores.
Also, use rubbing alcohol on the areas that you have zits, be careful not to use too much tho, because if you do it will dry out your face and then your glands will produce more oil, and you'll have even more acne. Also, If you aren't going anywhere special, don't apply makeup to those areas, it will clog the pores. If you do wear makeup during the day, make sure to wash it off with astringent before going to sleep.

I used to get bad acne too, and I still get the occasional breakout (usually just before I'm due for a period!) and the only thing that really knocks them on the head for me is plain soap and water, followed by Tea Tree oil. Go to your local health food shop and buy a small bottle - give it a go. It helps boost the immune system somehow and is an effective antiseptic. Try a little on a small space of skin first, to check for sensitivity, then carefully with some cotton wool, wipe sparingly over the affected area. It'll dry the place out (be warned, it feels very strange - rather like super-strength peppermint...) and help prevent a recurrence. You might need to dilute it slightly in grapeseed oil or another carrier oil if you have sensitive skin. Also try lavender oil - also antiseptic... :)

Check out the Body Shop website for further details...

Good luck!

Right now my skin is perfectly clear, for the first time in 3 years. It's been about 9 weeks and all my acne is gone. It is such a great feeling to wake up with clear skin.

I know exactly how you feel!!!
I tried everything too, but the best thing that worked on my acne was oral antibiotics, which you can get with a prescription from your doctor (doesn't even have to be dermatologist). You should combine this with diet (limit soda, chips, sweets consumption), wash your face twice a day, tone and moisturize and put acne medication on problem spots (I personally don't like proactive--try Biotherm cleaning system. It's a little pricy but it works and smells great) and finally NO PICKING!!! I myself have ignored this so many times, but trust me if you avoid touching your face for one week, you'll see the results. Good luck!

I used strong tasted toothpaste, dab it just at the tip of the spot (don't smear it, let the paste stay only at the tip), leave it over night by morning it should dry (spot). Just be careful don't get rid of it (spot) straight away, let it disappear naturally otherwise you might get crater. And try to note which food give you acne. Normally if you avoid fatty food like nuts and chocolate, should help. I am almost 50 now but if I eat too much chocolate, I still get acne.

Things like Clean & Clear will not help, these actually strip the oils from your skin that are needed to help keep your skin healthy and spot-free, such products also contain harmful ingredients that effect your skins health - if you read the ingredients on the back and find a good site like the EWG skindeep site to look up the ingredients and their risks.

The best method, in fact the best thing for skin full stop is Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) - this is where you use oil to cleanse your skin.

Most people start with a 50:50 mix of Extra Virgin Olive Oil : Castor Oil, EVOO is moisturizing where as Castor Oil is cleansing – some people will use other oils (I personally use nothing but Jojoba oil) and will change the mix to perhaps 75:25 or 25:75 depending on their skin type (i.e. if your skin is dry you would use more EVOO to moisturize), and some will also add essential oils such as lavender or tea tree oil (both help prevent and treat spots) – one advantage of OCM is that it is totally customisable so if your skin type changes, as it does very often, you can change the mix to suit your skin.

You put the oil onto your face, then take a facecloth that has been into hot water and rung out and put the facecloth onto your face, leave the facecloth on your face for a minute so it is similar to steaming your face to open up your pores, then wipe off the oil – follow with a toner such as Rosewater to help clean off any small excess oil and tighten your pores after they have been opened by the heat of the facecloth.

Reason it works is because it does not strip your skin of it's natural oils – when you wash your face with washes or soap it strips the natural oils that help keep your skin healthy and help keep your pores clean, so your skin is not only not as healthy as it should be but your skin also produces a load more oil to make up for all it has lost.

Reason for OCM being so good is not only is it VERY good for your skin, but it is also very customisable, cheap, easy to get a hold of, easy to use, does not support animal testing (as many commercial products do) and does not contain a load of toxic chemicals (as many commercial products do).

I wish someone would have told me about zinc when I was a teenager and struggling with acne. If you take it once a week with a meal, it'll clear up.
Also, remember that everything you eat will eventually come out of your pores...so eat only good things and that will definitely help.
Good luck!!

First off, acne never really goes away, females always tend to break out right before or during their period, its hormone. Secondly, if you can visit your local dermatoligist, but if you cannot get in to see a derm, try arcona product, girl their Tabula Rasa will knock out just about any pimple. Check them out on line, call and consult w/ them, and see about getting samples, try before you buy.

Proactive did not work for my brother when he was a teen, so I would suggest avoiding it.
