Cover stain with salt and then squeeze lemon juice onto the salt. Leave for about an hour then rinse well and repeat if necessary. Wash in the normal manner. Proprietary rust removers can be used on some fabrics.
Alternatively, pour lemon juice directly onto the rust stain and lay it out in the direct sunlight. The stain disappears within 10 to 15 minutes. This works well on whites as well as coloured fabrics and is completely safe.

There are two products I would recommend, CLR and Lime Away. Both will get rid of rust stains but whatever you use, read the instructions carefully if you have a granite or stone counter top. A lot of cleaning chemicals will permanently damage stone and it will be worse than ever. Both of these products should be found in most major department or home improvement stores in the cleaning section.
Good Luck!!!

Have you tried lemon juice? I know it will dissolve rust off of the metal object, but have not yet tried it on a stain.

if your counter is white, you can try bleach. i rented a place that was trashed when i got there, sometimes i'd mix bleach with comet, or some other cleaner, but if the rust is really bad, just use bleach, a sponge, and elbow grease! good luck!

If you have a formica type counter top use comet or ajax with a little bleach, and scrub it with a scotch brite or s.o.s. pad. It may take a few tries, but it will come out.
