I think its because its our nature as human beings to be afraid of the unknown, I also think the main reason is because we are afraid of what would happen if things go wrong and we are also afraid or are not ready or prepared to face the consequences if things or plans go wrong. Example, Bill Gates and Michael Dell took risks by starting their own companies, if they failed, they would have faced the consequences because they didn't have people who depended on them as they were still teenagers when their companies started, actually, their parents would have cleaned up their mess. But a person like Sam Walton took a risk by starting Wal-Mart in his forties, he had family to look after, but he took the risk because he was ready to face the consequeces if things didn't go according to plan. I can think of a lot of people i know personaly who are afraid to take risks because of what would happen if they don't go according to plan, myself included, I am just not ready to deal or face the consequences if things go wrong. I have to say that I dwell on the negative side too much as well because i don't focus on the positive side of what would happen if things did go according to plan, but i guess i have to conclude by saying that if your life is ruled by fear, then you won't go anywhere. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
My suggestion is that we should all take risks because what i am really afraid of is, when i'm 50, (i'm 21 now), and i haven't achieved much, i'm afraid to look back and think what if i started that company, i basically don't wanna say "what if" when i'm in my old age, for that reason alone, i've decided that i'm gonna start my business within the next 2 years, you should take risks as well.

Ovbiouslly because we can't assern to a particular outcome. IT can go both negative and/or positive. Every decision we make in life has risk. The problem is you have pepole that won't take any risk what so ever. Those are the one's who don't acomplish anything in life.

Because you are afraid of success changing everything, adrinaline rushes hurt after the fact, the great amt of arrousal- physical mental and spiritual is more than most people can handle. you want to hang glide, but scared to death it'll catch a slip and fall backward into a cliff, so you hessitate, then go any way. As you catch your first thermal, youre arrousal is so great you mess your pants.. How embarassing is that? Really, fear is the oposite of faith: if you have no faith, you wont try.
