Recent research has shown that babies who normally get a pacifier at night are at increased risk of SIDS on nights when they don't have it. So I would say you should *only* give a pacifier at night if you are going to be *very* certain to always have them in the house. While the risk of SIDS happening to any particular baby are small (about 1-2 per thousand babies), the risk of your losing an entire night's sleep when you break or lose the last pacifier right before bedtime are extremely high!!

And, by the way, there are those who are misinterpreting the above study to say that *every* baby should have a pacifier. That is *not* the results of the research...

YES!!! I would have killed myself without a pacifier for my little one. It's totally normal. You need the sleep, so you can take the best care of that little baby it the day, instead of being exhausted all the time. It's better for the baby to have a well rested parent. Trust me my little girl is 18 months in about a month you won't think twice about handing over the pacifier. plus you don't want the baby sucking it's thumb that's a hard habit to break sometimes lasting well into the toddler years.

Yes it is safe. If you use a bottle to feed your baby you should try to match the pacifer to the same kind of nipple. As a retired nurse with over 20 years experience with working in a hospital with newborns, we always gave them pacifiers. As a mother of 3 grown children, I had one that loved his pacifier until we was 2 but I don't think they should walk around with them, it should be a treat to have in bed.

I did with both of my boys when they were infants. They never kept the pacifier in all night though. I'd put them to sleep with it, and when they woke up for bottles, and again when they woke up in the morning, the pacifier would always be on the floor. :) I think turning their head, sucking on it, etc. sometimes makes it fall out.

It is not a problem....pacifier use actually REDUCES the risk of SIDS....when they dont want it anymore or they fall into a deep sleep they automatically spit it out, so dont worry about it....It can also help you get an extra hour or so of sleep at night, because sucking is comforting to babies and helps soothe them!

The evidnece to suggest it reduces the risk of SIDS only applys in the first 12 months of a babies life. then get rid of it, and at 12 months that should be easy as they get attached to things more around 15 months. up to 12 months i think its fine if u must but dont do it if ur babe is already sleeping ok, as it can cause problems like when they lose it in the night they want u to come in and pop it back in their mouths. and they can be a bit or a health risk unless ur diligent at washing and sterilising them, every day at least!! good luck.

yes. It has been proven to help reduce SIDS since it keeps them moving during sleep. Just that little bit is enouhg to help them keep breathing. Also, as far as being confused betwen breat nipple and pacifier, there's clearly a difference. babies aren't stupid. they can tell what gives them something and what doesn't

I heard on some message on TV that the baby will just cry when it falls out of its mouth and wont sleep so its good to get him in a habit of not using one to sleep.
