Is it still on? Its has been several years now and you dont hear much about it anymore. I read some stuff about people commiting infantcide alot and stuff like that...but what Im curious about is ...has there been any effect on society...like now a generation is growing up as only children...no such thing as a cousin, brother or sister...soon no such thing as a aunt or uncle. The only defintition of family will be child-parents- grandparents. Wont that affect things..the dynamics of society? Only children tend to be a bit self centred and spoiled...what happens when thats all there is..and the extended family is obsolete? Doesnt this sound dangerous? It doesnt seem natural. Does anyone know anything about this?

One effect of it is very well known: everyone wants a boy so girls that are born are often killed or cast aside. orphanages are filled with abandoned baby girls and people all over the world are adopting Chinese girls.
and you are right in your question: the boys are treated like princes, spoiled to the bone, they don't learn very much to share or accept authority from others. You see now for the first time fat children in China, a new phenomenon. And in the long run these princes will not be able to cooperate at work very much and that may seriously damage the giant rise of the Chinese economics...Its too soon to tell yet but the signs are all ready there. and yes, the one baby rule is still on.

yes, i saw a TV special. it is making a big change in the culture. it is changing the family and no longer are the big families forming and having loyalties etc. no longer does the big brother have to send the little bro to collge etc. there are many families that choose to abort or kill after birth any female child while trying to get a boy. there are too many boys and they will not be able to marry chinese girls eventually as there are not enough to go around.
Maybe the chinese boys ( men) could start to marry the american girls ( women) ho cannot find husbands because so many men are gay or do not want to marry etc.
Maybe some day USA women will try to emigrate to China to get married. maybe they will sneak across the border like mexicans.
Maybe the China men can marry the women of eastern Russia where there are so many women wanting to get married but no suitable spouses.

What scares me more is that they even had to implement this rule. There's so much poverty in those areas, that people aren't really too focused on family and society. I don't think it's had much of an effect, but it might after a while, when the older people start dying. Did you watch broken trail today? that's the way it still is today.

I just think it is totally stupid..... China is a huge country with more open land then you can imagine!!! Their cities are crowded but the country is not.
So expand the housing and the cities or start a new town some where.
Why pack everyone into a small area like sardines?

They made that rule in China because they are over populated and they wanted to try to keep the population down without killing the Chinese race.

in the short run: population control, possible increase in literacy, drop in poverty levels, increase in GDP and general income (less expenditure on commodities, more expenditure on superior goods)

in the long run: ageing population (Japan's problem, and prospectively Singapore's), lack of human resource, probable development of a multiracial society if they decide to bring in foreign talents.
