Computer manufacturers tend to recycle parts from older PCs. Perhaps you could give them a call :).

I help out at a Salvation Army, and they take pretty much anything. I'm surprised they didn't take the computers. Go to one of the Salvation Army Family Stores. They should take them.

I know because they end up turning around and selling them for about $40 for the setup of a computer about 10 years old. You should also be able to write them off on your taxes. Ask for a reciept afterwards.

If you don't plan to repair it (it could be something minor), remove the hard drive. Check to see if there are any charitable organizations (churches, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) which might be willing to accept it as a donation . They could use it for parts, or install a new drive and repair it to be used by elderly or indigent clients. If not, check with to see if your city or county has a program to recycle elctronics, or if there are any special requirements for disposing of it. If you can't recover data from the hard drive, destroy it (a hammer works well). This will protect any personal data that may be stored on it. Nothing else in the computer would have any data stored on it.

Look up computer recycling in the yellow pages or on the internet. Look under Computer Recycling in the yellow pages. Try a search engine if you want to find it on the internet. They might be able to pay you some money for your old computers.

Disposal of electronic equipment such as older computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, etc., is becoming a larger problem every day. It is increasingly common that you may have to pay to properly dispose of many types of older equipment. The non profit organizations listed below are primarily interested in receiving equipment that they can either use or resell, and are not interested in receiving equipment that they themselves will just have to pay to dispose of.

Many states have passed laws that prohibit the dumping of items such as monitors, computers and printers, and are requiring that these items be properly disposed of. If you cannot find a non profit organization that will accept your equipment at no charge, we encourage you to contact a recycling center, such as the ones listed at the bottom of this page, to properly dispose of your equipment.

Also, watch your local news for special electronics recycling days that are now being held in many cites, where you can dispose of smaller amounts of equipment at no charge.

Join your local Freecycle group and post them there. Someone will come and pick it up from you. If you aren't comfortable having a stranger come to your door, you can always let them know that you will leave them on the porch, or put them in a box by the curb, or you could even arrange to meet them in a public place and bring a friend.

ebay has a website for old computer parts and they may give you money for them (not the auction site, it's a separate service) other wise schools usually will take them and repair them or use them as is. Yale give it's old computers to schools (and I mean really old, and some not so old).
