Africa was called "The Dark Continent" simply because so little was known about it up until fairly recently. Especially, sub-Saharan Africa was a mystery to Europeans who referred to it as the Dark Continent as an inducement for exploration. Unfortunately, quickly on the heels of that exploration came colonial rule and the exploitation of the land and its resources, particularly its people.

its called the dark continent not the black continent...and its called that because we have been through hard times, stavation, floods, famine, aids and many other deseases. and then we get niave americans who can only see the bad in africa and never look at our diverse cultures.
