I'm a nanny for them this summer, and although I will have a budget to spend, I also need to think of things that dont cost money. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Plan picnic-hopping.. Identify several locations suitable for picnic and take the kids there to experience different scenarios. Plan different activities too like making kites then kite flying, or play board games, etc. Get them to prepare simple meals, like sandwich, or salad, or fruit cocktails.

At the end of it, you can get the kids to organise a costume party where you can all take turns to talk about your favourite summer activity.

Depends on where you live... museums are sometimes free or ask a nominal fee, you can spend all day in some of those!

Bike rides with a picnic can be fun with older children... a game of cricket or rounders in the park.... I'm guessing that these older children will be off with their friends most days or friends visiting the house.... so hopefully you won't have to do much hand holding.

A picnic to the country side, or to a village, or maybe going to the beach can create a lot of fun beside the low costs. You can make some bar-B-Q or take some home-made sandwiches, and if you don't like to cook, just buy some tasty food from any place on your way.. Don't forget to buy a water melon; the fruit of summer season (if available).

Hope you have a nice trip :-)

Maybe try your local council, I know around here many of the museums etc are free. Or check the local paper for activities, there are usually list of places during the summer break. If all else fails you could maybe ask at the school, I am sure they could point you in the right direction.

If you have use of a garden or field, this worked with my kids. Get 2 clean jam jars and a magnifying glass, send them to different parts of the garden/ field and see how many different insects they can find, then look at closely. You'll be surprised how many creatures we take for granted or just don't see.

I have some ideas.

Offer them to have the kind of food they like for dinner, you know pizza, hamburguers, hotdog, that kind of things, if they all prepare it, for them and for their parents. So you can take them even shopping the ingredients, and make them prepare the dinner with your help. At that age they can help you a lot.

At that age they like music, so you can ask them to show you the music they like, and maybe sing with them, or dance, if they like to dance.

You can always share some movie, in the DVD, there are lots of great movies for their ages, that both can share, after the movie, you can ask them to prepare some lemmon water, or just to sit and have a chat about the movie, what they liked about it, etc.

They migth like some sports, so you can join them to watch that sport at TV, and maybe they would like to go to some place to practice it, you should ask their parents if there is some posibility to take them out and where, so they can do some exercise.

The 12 yr old girl, migth still like to play with her toys, so, you can just join with her and follow her lead.

The 15 yr old boy, migth have his own agenda, so you have to just be aware of what he plan to do, and be aware of him. It is dificult that he follows you in some activities. i guess.

It depends on where , in what country you are based !!
Take them to the beach,
have a picnic in the park and take frisbee / bat and mitt etc..., (light) rambling in the country,
science or sport museums.
