I am considering putting 2gigs of DDR SD RAM in my computer. But in my search I found 184-pin and 240-pin. I dont think it matters what you put in the dimm slot, but I just want to be sure.

The difference is one will not fit in the other. You need to find out what your motherboard takes and that is what you want to get. If you own a Dell or a store bought computer like that then their web page should get you straght as to what to get. Yes it does matter what you put in the damn slot and can mean improving your computers speed or slowing it down, even if you are adding more RAM. Just a little note, 2 gigs of Ram is a good idea espically if you plan to upgrade to Vista after it is released.

if you got the 240 pin and your running ddr sd ram take it back grab a pc2700 or pc3200 184 pin 400mhz (pc3200) or 333mhz (pc2700) what ever your systems bus speed is if it doesnt fit dont jam it in there or youll be buying a new motherboard which means you may have to get all new parts for it too because the old stuff would probably be incompatible and oh yeah you would have to buy the OS agian so dont mess up your memory banks please

56 pins?.....really, have to use what will fit into the memory slot. if it takes 184 pin ddr then a 240 pin ddr2 won't work. you should also find out what speed the memory you have is such as pc400 or pc 333 and get that.

you have to find out if your motherboard has a 184 pin slot or a 240 pin slot. you also have to know the speed that your motherboard supports ex pc 2700 333MHz or pc 3200 400MHz.
and if your still not take you computer to where your going to buy your memory and let them check it for you!!

Good Luck

the difference is 56 pins... but as already mentioned, it depends on your motherboard, otherwise the ram won't fit or function.
